5. A couple of days into summer vacation은 여름방학 '전' 인가 '후' 인가.[DIARY of a Wimpy kid]

My summer did not exactly get off to a great start, thanks to my older brother Rodrick.

A couple of days into summer vacation, Rodrick woke me up in the middle of the night. He told me I slept throgh the whole  summer, but that luckily I woke up just in time for the first day of school.

A couple of days into summer vacation 이 정확히 방학 중 아무날 몇일 인지 아니면 방학 직후 인지, 직전인지 정확히 이해가 되지 않았어.

그래서 유사한 표현에 대한 원어민들의 답변을 찾아봤어.

인제 방학 직후 몇일 간을 의미한다는 것은 알겠어.

그런데 직후가 아닌 방학 중 아무 몇일을 의미할 수도 있는지 궁금해져 다시 물었는데 이런 답변을 받았어.

 

"A couple of days" very technically — and literally — means two days. You can get away with using "a couple of days" for

three days (and I might grudgingly allow four days), but absolutely not for an entire month.

"A couple of days"는 따지고 보면- 문자그대로- 2일을 의미해. (그리고) 3일을 뜻하기도하지(그리고 나한텐 아무리 쳐줘도 4일), 그러나 한 달을 의미하는건 절대 아니야.

 

If your vacation begins (or in British English, your holidays begin) on July 18, then for August 18, you could say:"A month into my summer vacation/holidays, something unexpected happened..."

만약 방학이 7월 18일 시작하고 8월 18일을 가리키고 싶다면  : "방학 후 한달이 지나고, 기대치 않은 어떤일이 발생..."

 

결론 : "A couple of days into summer vacation"은 방학 직후 2~3일 간을 의미한다. 방학 중 몇 일을 의미하는 것이 아니다.
