7.'let someone have it'이 무슨 뜻이게?(Diary of Wimpy kid)

[Mom and Dad protect Manny like he's a prince or somthing. And he never gets in trouble, even if he really deserves it.
Yesterday, Manny(younger brother) drew a self-portrait on my bedroom door in permanent marker. I thought Mom and Dad were really going to let him have it, but as usual, I was wrong.]

let him have it을 그대로 직였하면 그가 그것을 가지게 했다 정도잖아? 그래서 keep him drawing의 뜻인가 고민했어. 그런데 뒤 문맥과 의미가 맞지 않잖아.

 

그래서 원어민 에게 물어보니

 

"Let him have it means to severely scold him, probably accompanied by a punishment"

 

let him have it이 꾸짖다라는 뜻이라네...

네이버 사전에도 그런 뜻이 있다고 나와

그런데 이해가 되지 않았어

 

let 이나 have에는 꾸진다는 뜻이 없잖아?

 

그래서 원어민에게 이렇게 한 번 더 물었어.

"Could you explain why 'let him have it' has had that meaning'?"
"How do natives understand that mean scold even though it doesn't have any clue about it."
